creation phase, I wanted to ensure that I conveyed my culture accurately rather than just with my perspective. Through my own experience of Lao culture, there are still some questions that I have about how our traditions arose and why we do things a certain way. Growing up, and even today, I had a hard time explaining my culture and why we hold pageants every year other than to raise money. To fill in those gaps, I researched our traditions and spoke with family members from Laos to make sure the book reflected more than just my own experience of the culture. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61ef5d52f6ccc079607dd7f4/2b060574-cd43-4ecb-8007-b5e36cd4db00/15-16+2.jpg Noi Noi - Define After gathering that information, I became more self-aware about how some Laotian American children do not have an understanding of their culture and just accept things as-is. My goal with this book is to create a resource to introduce and educate children about Lao culture by focusing on our most celebrated holiday, Lao New Year or Pi Mai Lao. The target audience is children ages ten and older, regardless of cultural background — this book is meant to be a window into Lao culture for anyone curious about it. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61ef5d52f6ccc079607dd7f4/0d4d0ea5-22a4-49fa-905f-d4aa443cdcc3/Untitled_Artwork+1.png Noi Noi - Ideation: Context Children are more receptive than adults to learning through story — so I created a children's book that teaches Lao culture through rhythm and rhyme. Rather than presenting information directly, I wanted to make it something a child would want to return to. That's where Noi Noi came in: a relatable character to guide young readers through the world of the book. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61ef5d52f6ccc079607dd7f4/bec7ce3c-1b82-4b94-af6e-1baab90474d4/Untitled_Artwork+2.png Noi Noi - Ideation: Visuals After several revisions and critiques of the text, I moved on to the visual aspect of the book, character design, and color palette. I started by sketching out how I wanted Noi Noi and her grandmother to look and then came up with a contrasting color palette. To emphasize Noi Noi’s youthful appearance, I made her have a soft, rounded figure with big eyes. In contrast, her grandmother was slim with narrow eyes. In terms of color palette, I gave Noi Noi more pastels than her grandmother’s darker colors which are also muted. Rather than choose vibrant colors, I decided on muted tones because I wanted them to be more warming to the eyes rather than striking. After developing my two main characters, I went on to do sketches of pages. I was assisted by Gina Rattanakone, a close friend who also shares my Lao heritage. Some pages were more detailed in the coloring than others in lighting. I wanted the symbol of Dallas to be more recognizable, so I tried to do a logo with both the pegasus and the Texas Star Ferris Wheel. I thought that the ferris wheel would help to add clarity to the city since the State Fair is located in Dallas, but then it didn’t seem to balance well with the pegasus. With the symmetry in the design it gives off a sense of harmony and unity with the variety in colors. I also made sure to differentiate the text by making Andrea Trew’s name a contrasting value of orange to emphasize who the speaker was. I found that the Greek sphinx had wings and wore a headband in most of the visuals I could find. The Egyptian Sphinx of Giza had a specific headpiece and no wings. I used a similar body structure but different facial and hair features to compare the two. The greek sphinx I designed had a straight and wavy hair look with a simple headband, whereas the Egyptian sphinx had a headpiece, and her eyeliner extended a bit away from the corners of her eyes. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61ef5d52f6ccc079607dd7f4/e8719090-726b-4c42-b84d-e5db114dd7a4/IMG_3124+copy.jpg Sphinx Card - Final Design Working with only three colors, green being the background, proved to be difficult, especially when it came to how to create the headpiece for the Egytian sphinx. I chose to use black and silhouette of the headpiece and added some papyrus plants in the background to add a bit of detail. It seemed that both Greek and Egyptian art contain some depiction of papyrus or a similar plant so I made that the unifier between the two sphinxes. The layout of the design was intended to be similar to a standard card design where one portion mirrors the other in a diagonal fashion.
